Smooth
Trunkfish

Lactophyris
triqueter
The Smooth Trunkfish
is a common catch to inhabitants of the eastern and
southeastern parts of the United States. They are often
encountered in coastal waters and easily approached. This
species has been encountered both solitarily and in
groups. The background coloring is a pale brown,
accentuated with white circles. The middle of the sides
display a hint of yellow. In comparison to other cowfish
and boxfish species, this one is plain inlooking. That
coupled with its great size potential and limited range
prevents it from being a very popular aquarium specimen.

This is a very large
species, growing to as long as 30 cm. It's large size
will require tank at least 130 gallons. In the wild, it
inhabits common reefs and sandy patches of 3 to 25
meters. This species has been found in a limited range
that includes Massachussettes to Bermuda, and Gulf of
Mexico to the shores of Brazil.
The fish naturally
feeds a various benthic invertebrates by blowing jets of
water into the substrate. However, the fish easily adapts
to frozen versions of piscine prepared food.
Care and husbandry
are nearly identical to other cowfish and boxfish
species. The tank should have good illumnation and some
rock work or live rock for hiding spaces, yet plenty of
open space for swimming room. The water should be kept at
a temperature of 72 to 76 degrees Farenheit, with
specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. The Smooth Trunkfish
is a good community fish if kept with other peaceful,
non-aggressive species.
