Whitespotted
Toby

Hawaiian
Whitespotted Toby (Canthigaster
jactator)

This species from
the Hawaiian Islands is less than 4 inches when fully
grown. Hence, it may be kept in an aquarium as small as
20 gallons.
It will eat a wide
variety of invertebrates, and therefore, is not reef
safe. This smaller puffer, sometimes referred to as
Sharpnose Puffer, behaves much like larger,
balloon-shaped species but requires less space.
Unfortunately, this
colorful species is well known for ripping fins of tank
mates, and even leaving circular bite marks in their
skin. It is more likely to behave aggressively in smaller
tanks. It is best kept as a single specimen or as a male
and female pair in a tank with lots of swimming room.
This fish may
occasionally require de-worming. Also, its constantly
growing teeth may need to be trimmed if it is not fed a
sufficient amount of hard shelled invertebrates to keep
them worn down. If the teeth grow too long, the fish will
not be able to feed.
