Bridled
Burrfish

Chilomycterus
antillarum

The BridledBurrfish
or Spiny Boxfish reaches nearly 10 inches when full
grown, so it will require an aquarium of at least 75
gallons. Unlike the Porcupine and Spiny Puffers, this
species short spines remain erect. It will do best with
at least 3 small feedings per day, which should include
enriched vegetable foods, as well as seafood proteins.
Unfortunately, this
species is not as easy to keep as the Spiny Puffer. It
often refuses to feed in captivity and will commonly
waste away. Better luck may be had with smaller
specimens, especially if there aren't competitive tank
mates.
It is a good idea to
deworm this species on a regular basis, as it is not
unusual for parasites to overcome it. Sometimes the
Burrfish will nip at benthic tankmates, or slow moving
species with long fins. It does very well with related
species, however. This fish appreciates plenty of
swimming space.
